Being together with little children always lets me realize something new. A four year old student always says to me, “What’s next?” Actually in Japanese if I put it literally, she says, “Next? Next?” (Tsugiwa? Tsugiwa?) This shows her curiosity and willingness to learn new things and her trust in me that I never fail to give her something interesting.

Last time while I was reading a Japanese picture book, I was surprised to find that she ccould read Japanese quite well. Maybe a little better than an average first grader. And while I was singing an English song from a music book and playing the guitar, she was able to tell where the page 100 was. She could read the numbers!

Some of the education obsessed parents may praise her and would want to raise their children like her. But wait a minute. Recognized her as such a good reader gave a solution to the wonder I had had about this child : why this smart child seems to have difficulty in parroting what I say in English. An average 4year old child has a marvelous ability to repeat or mimic what he or she hears. It has nothing to do with the ability to understand. However, this child seemed to have a slight difficulty to parrot what I said.

Because she had developed the skills in Japanese so much that she had also developed a habit of listening Japanese and understanding what was happening around her only through a filter of Japanese. Of course she is far more intelligent than average Japanese 4 year olds. Yet this suggests that having strong set of mental processor can block certain form of information.

Hi joy!
My grandson, 3 years old three months came to my house
with his parents, a younger sister.
He began English recently. He sings a song of the ABC,
and he is counted in English from 1 to 20.
He seems to love an English teacher.
He reads the number of the clock in English and enjoys it.
However, he does not seem to understand the meaning just to enjoy.
Anyway, I thought that curiosity and the willingness
of a young child were wonderful.
Take care.

Hello, hiro.
Children at the age of 3,4,5 usually shows incredibly high ability to mimic the linguistic expression they hear. Right, they mimic before they understand, and making vocal sound and mimicing is simply fun for them. Maybe we human beings are prorammed like this because becasue making vocal sound leads to acquiring languages.
